Yank Magazine VW Kübelwagen Paris 26th August 1944

This set of markings is for a VW Kübelwagen Typ 82 that was used by a group of YANK magazine journalists and photographers, seen during the celebrations for the liberations of Paris on 26 August 1944. A colour photograph by Frank Scherschel of Time & Life magazines can be seen here.

The Kubelswagen was in a rather battered state with its windscreen glass missing. It had been painted Olive Drab overall and marked with crudely applied white allied stars. To indicate that it carried journalists, apart from the "YANK MAGAZINE" logos, the vehicle had a Press dispatch bag tied to its front. This was a common way of identifying vehicles used by journalists. The bumper code on its right hand fender is not visible in the photo but we believe it could be 3A as it was the US Third Army that liberated Paris. The rear view presented here is pure conjecture.
When printed in 1/35 scale or larger the set also includes the badges worn by the journalists so the modeller can also complete the crew of this vehicle.
